In the first part of the book, he offers an eyewitness account of the terrorist attacks in New York City and their aftermath, dealing with both the local human consequences and with the political, historical, and global significance of the attacks. The second part of the book moves to Geneva in 2003, where Malcomson was senior adviser to Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN's special representative for Iraq. The same year, Vieira de Mello was killed by al Qaeda in Baghdad. Revealed for the first time are strategy memos, speeches, and other politically sensitive material that Malcomson wrote in his position. The author is now the foreign editor at the New York Times Magazine. The book is distributed in the US by Books International.
